Grimes Mill in Salisbury, North Carolina, began in 1896 as the North Side Roller Mill, one of the area’s earliest flour roller mills. After sale, bankruptcy, and purchase by John D. Grimes, whose earlier Lexington mill had been North Carolina’s first roller mill, the property expanded under the Grimes family and reached peak production in the 1930s. Later adapted for new industrial and retail uses, it eventually became North Carolina’s only roller mill museum. Architecturally unusual as a Second Empire industrial building, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 before a major fire destroyed it in 2013, ending a rare survivor of the state’s milling past.
