In downtown Montgomery, Alabama, the National Memorial for Peace and Justice honors Black victims of lynching in the United States and confronts the legacy of racial terror and segregation. Founded by the Equal Justice Initiative and opened on April 26, 2018, it includes a central space of 805 suspended steel beams, each representing a county where a documented racial terror lynching occurred and naming victims when known. Drawing on research documenting nearly 4,400 lynchings between 1877 and 1950, the site also links this history to slavery, the civil rights movement, and present-day violence through artworks, reflection spaces, and a national community remembrance effort.
