The Family Fishing Hole
History
5
This pond, once called Lowry's Pond, recalls the many small farms that once dotted the landscape. In 1938, newlyweds Lowell and Hazel Lowry purchased the surrounding 40 acres and soon established a farm with a log home built from the woodlot, a barn, livestock, and a garden. By 1954, Lowell and a hired man had excavated the pond and stocked it with fish. The pond became central to the farm, with the fish supplementing beef from Lowell's herd, quail and squirrel hunted on the farm, and vegetables grown and canned by Hazel. The Lowry Farm and its pond became a gathering place for family and friends, and today the pond is all that remains of the farm.
