Prospect Terrace Park, a small hilltop park on Congdon Street in Providence’s College Hill neighborhood, was founded in 1869 on land donated by local residents. Known for its panoramic views over downtown Providence and its reputation as “The Jewel of the City,” it also contains a prominent granite statue of Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island, dedicated in 1939. That monument became his resting place after his remains were moved to a tomb beneath it, while the preserved “Williams Root” from his original grave went to the John Brown House Museum. The park also has ties to H. P. Lovecraft and has undergone restoration after vandalism and years without renovation.
