Thunder Hole is a large, partly submerged crevice with vertical granite walls, one of many such chasms along this shore, where the surging power of the ocean meets the steadfastness of rock. When waves roll into Thunder Hole, their power is concentrated, producing thunder that can be felt and heard and sending spray soaring, most dramatically at mid-tide with a rising sea.
