In Johnstown’s Cambria City neighborhood, the Wagner–Ritter House preserves the everyday history of an immigrant working-class family whose lives were tied to the Cambria Iron Company. Built around 1865 by German immigrants George and Frances Wagner, the modest four-room home sheltered three generations for about 130 years. It also survived the Johnstown Flood of May 31, 1889, when the family took refuge upstairs and rescued a woman through a window as floodwaters rose 13 feet inside. Donated in the 1990s and later restored, the property revealed thousands of artifacts and now presents domestic life, family labor, and flood survival as central parts of Johnstown’s past.
