The Great Blue Heron is a wetland bird that lives in the Slough year round and is adaptable enough to live in marshes, streams, and lakes. Its range extends from Florida to the coastline of Alaska, and as a top predator it eats fish, frogs, snakes, turtles, and even baby alligators. The pavilion’s design interprets the heron, with three balls suspended from the underside of the wing representing the realms of animals that crawl, walk, and fly. As part of green certification, the roof used bamboo from Columbia called “vegetable steel,” a rapidly renewable resource that can be harvested six years after planting. The design also incorporated recycled steel, with beams from bridges, poles from large drills, and concrete as a local material that can be recycled.
