Grays River Covered Bridge in western Washington is the state’s only covered bridge still serving as a public highway and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1971. Built in 1905 for horse-and-wagon farm traffic, it crossed the river on Hans P. Ahlberg’s property after he helped win county approval. The timber bridge was enclosed in 1908 to protect its wooden trusses from heavy rain. After severe deterioration in the late 1980s, local residents helped save it through a major 1988 restoration and reconstruction. Now part of Ahlberg Park, it remains an active crossing, a landmark, and the center of an annual festival.
