Founded in 1892 as the Portland Art Association, the Portland Art Museum grew from an initial cast collection funded by Henry Corbett into one of the region’s largest art institutions. It helped shape Portland’s cultural life through early exhibitions of new art, including a 1913 version of the Armory Show, and through its educational role in the Museum Art School. Its main site opened in 1932, with major additions by Pietro Belluschi in 1939 and 1970, followed by later expansions that added film, graphic arts, Native American art, Northwest art, and modern and contemporary art. By 2025, its collection exceeded 50,000 objects.
