Founded in 1791, the Albany Institute of History and Art is one of the oldest museums in the United States and has long been tied to Albany’s civic and intellectual life. It began as a learned society advising the state on agriculture and the economy, then evolved through new art initiatives and a pivotal 1823 merger into a center for scientific exchange, where Joseph Henry presented his first paper on electromagnetism in 1829. In the later 19th century it shifted toward history and art, helping shape the modern institution. Today, its Washington Avenue complex and collections reflect more than two centuries of Upper Hudson Valley history, art, and culture.
