Formed through a 2013 merger, it grew from the Museum of the Confederacy, founded in 1894 after preservationists saved the former Confederate executive mansion. Its holdings include extensive Confederate artifacts, manuscripts, photographs, battle flags, and major items such as the provisional Confederate Constitution and Great Seal. The White House of the Confederacy, where Jefferson Davis lived during the war, and Historic Tredegar, tied to Richmond’s industrial past, anchor its interpretation, while the Appomattox site examines the war’s final days and early reunion.
