The fort at Frederica had four bastions, a palisaded ditch, and a covered way defended by fifteen pieces of cannon. Cannon protected Frederica’s river approaches from enemy ships, with large guns mounted behind the fort parapets and in batteries near the water’s edge. In 1742, cannon located downriver prevented Spanish galleys from reaching the fort. A corroded gun tube may have been part of Frederica’s original armament, and its wooden carriage has been reconstructed. Other nearby cannon are about the same age but were not originally at Frederica. A smoothbore muzzle-loader like this could fire a 12-pound ball one mile, and its compact garrison-type carriage recoiled after each shot before rolling back into firing position. A wooden wedge, or quoin, was used to raise or lower the aim.
