Holmesville, two miles north, was named for Maj. A.H. Holmes and served as the second county seat of Pike County from 1816 to 1875. It declined after being bypassed by the railroad in 1857. Its cemetery contains the grave of Revolutionary War soldier Peter Quin and those of other early settlers.
