The Headlands is a five hundred fifty-acre county park near Mackinaw City in northern Michigan that protects more than two miles of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline in the Straits of Mackinac. Operated by Emmet County, it also includes woodlands and habitat for rare and endangered plants, along with wildlife such as black bear, whitetail deer, coyotes, bald eagles, osprey, and wild turkey. Its marked trails support hiking, photography, bicycling, and cross-country skiing. The park is especially notable for its night skies, and in May 2011 it became the sixth park in the United States and ninth worldwide to receive International Dark Sky Park designation.
