Harold C. Urey was born April 29, 1893, at Walkerton, Indiana, to Samuel Clayton and Cora Rebecca (Reinoehl) Urey. A scientist, educator, lecturer, and author, he won the 1934 Nobel Prize for his discovery of heavy hydrogen, or deuterium, and was noted for many other major contributions to science. Through his discovery of deuterium, the hydrogen bomb became possible.
