The Home on the Range Site is the location of the historic Higley Cabin, which was approved for listing on the National Historical Register on March 26, 1973. The site covers 240 acres, consisting of the original homestead of Dr. Brewster Higley VI plus an additional 80 acres. Within that acreage are 13 acres for the cabin site, bordered on the west by a wire fence, on the south by 90 Road, on the east by the entrance road, and on the north by the present location. The rest of the acreage is range and cropland rented to a private operator. Net income from the landlord's share of the farming operation is invested back into the site, and no individual benefits financially from it. The site also includes the Rust Memorial Nature Trail and information stations about the area, and there is no admission charge so it can be enjoyed regardless of financial means.
