Jasper County was created by an act of the legislature on Dec. 10, 1807. It is named for Sergeant Jasper, a Revolutionary hero from South Carolina who rescued some American prisoners from their British guards at Jasper Spring near Savannah and was later killed in the siege of Savannah. When the county was created, it was named Randolph for John Randolph, a Virginia statesman, but his later views on the War of 1812 made him unpopular in Georgia, leading to the county’s name being changed to Jasper by an act of Dec. 10, 1812. Subsequently, a new county was named for Randolph in 1828.
