Bayou Bend is an American heritage collection in a mansion built in 1927 by William Clifford, Ima, and Mike Hogg, children of James Stephen Hogg, the first native Texan governor, and his wife Sarah Stinson. Will Hogg, an attorney and businessman, originated a student loan program in numerous Texas colleges, served as chairman of the Board of Regents of the University of Texas from 1914 to 1916, and developed River Oaks, where Buffalo Bayou makes a noted bend. Mike Hogg, a Texas legislator from 1927 to 1931, joined his sister in establishing the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health at the University of Texas. Ima Hogg founded the Houston Symphony in 1913 and the Child Guidance Center of Houston in 1929, served on the Houston School Board from 1943 to 1949, and worked in restoration and preservation, creating Varner-Hogg State Park in West Columbia and the Winedale Inn complex in Fayette County. Ima Hogg and her brothers used their home and its 14-acre natural setting to house paintings and American memorabilia and to entertain national and international personages. Their collections span three centuries, from about 1650, and fill 19 rooms. In 1957, Ima Hogg gave Bayou Bend, its park, and its treasures to the Museum of Fine Arts of Houston.
