Germanna was an early German settlement in Virginia’s colonial backcountry, established in 1714 on the Rapidan River under Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood. He brought settlers from Nassau-Siegen and later from the Palatinate, Baden, and Württemberg to supply miners, promote ironworking, and strengthen the frontier. The community included what is described as the first German Reformed congregation in America, whose church also served defensively. Germanna later became the seat of Spotsylvania County and the center of Spotswood’s mining, ironworks, and estate ambitions. Its families’ descendants spread south and west, and the site remains important for archaeology, preservation, and early colonial history.
