Maude E. Callen (1898-1990), born in Quincy, FL, trained at Florida A&M Univ. and the Tuskeegee Institute before moving with her husband to Pineville, S.C., in 1923, where she worked as an Episcopal missionary and one of the few nurse-midwives in S.C. She delivered over 800 babies, taught community women midwifery, and served poor patients throughout Berkeley County. In 1951, she was featured in a Life magazine photo essay, and the resulting national donations made possible the construction of the health clinic she had long envisioned. The clinic operated from 1953 to 1986. Callen retired in 1971 but continued serving the people of Berkeley County until her death in 1990.
