Memphis’s Pink Palace Museum and Planetarium occupies an unfinished pink Georgian marble mansion begun in 1923 for Piggly Wiggly founder Clarence Saunders, who sold it to the city after financial reversals. Reopened in 1930 as the Memphis Museum of Natural History and Industrial Arts, it developed from early displays of natural history and local memory into a broad museum of science, archaeology, and city history. Its best-known exhibit recreates the original Piggly Wiggly store, linking the site to Saunders’s pioneering self-service grocery model. Later additions included an annex, the Sharpe Planetarium, and the Spotlight Giant Theater, while a 1934 Burton Callicott mural remains in the original lobby.
