Both U.S. and C.S. troops rendezvoused in Berryville during the Civil War, and by 1865 most of the town was in ruins. U.S. units stationed there in 1863-64 included the 1st and 2nd Arkansas Cavalry, 6th and 8th Missouri State Militia, and Gaddy's Home Guards. On April 16, 1864, Confederate guerrillas attacked a detachment of the 2nd Arkansas while it was foraging on the Osage branch of King's River. Six Union soldiers and six black teamsters died in the fight, and the Union casualties, along with others who died at the post, are buried in the city cemetery.
