Samuel H. Dalton, a widower, purchased this board and baton house from the John A. Logan estate in 1887 for $150. Born enslaved in 1839 in Richmond, Virginia, he lived in Mississippi at the beginning of the Civil War. After emancipation he enlisted in the Union Navy and left the service in 1864 in Cairo, Illinois. Dalton married Lumisa Hall in 1892. They had no children but raised a foster son, Samuel Brown. Dalton died in 1920, and Lumisa moved to Chicago in the 1930s, where she died. A privy, chicken house, and shed have been constructed to mirror structures on the Daltons' lot in 1897.
