Jimmy Carter of Plains served on the Sumter County School Board from 1955 to 1962, was a member of the Georgia Senate from 1963 to 1967, served as Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975, and was the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. He declared, “America did not invent Human Rights…Human Rights invented America.” on Jan. 14, 1981, and “The greatest legacy we can leave our children is a world of Peace.
