The John Fairey Garden is a 40-acre botanical garden in Hempstead, Texas, founded by John G. Fairey and formerly known as the Peckerwood Garden. Set between Austin and Houston, it contains more than 3,000 plants, including many collected on over 100 expeditions to Mexico and others acquired through exchanges with botanical gardens and nurseries. It is especially known for its oaks, with more than 60 species, including rare examples. The garden’s identity also rests on Fairey’s naturalistic design approach, expressed through pea gravel, steel hardscaping, stucco walls and fountain features, integrated art, and a landscape shaped by the meeting of three Texas geographic zones.
