The Whitewater Canal Trail follows the Whitewater River Valley through an eleven-mile park beginning at Laurel Feeder Dam, where water is supplied to the canal, and continuing past three original canal locks to U.S. 52, through the historic canal town of Metamora with its working grist mill, canal boat, and covered bridge aqueduct, and onward through farmland and scenery past the Twin Locks, a small aqueduct at Goose Creek, and Lock 21, the Yellow Bank Lock. Beyond the Yellow Bank Trailhead are a habitat restoration project in the basin of a canal-era ice pond and remains of an old highway, and plans called for completing the trail to Brookville by 2023, while two small sections in Brookville were already open to the public. A short 1.5-mile walk on an old railroad track bed follows the route of the historic Whitewater Canal and preserves reminders of Franklin County's transportation and commercial history, including a railroad bridge over the old canal, Hendrickson's Ice Pond, habitat areas for native plants and nesting birds, the remains of an abandoned bridge from the old road connecting Brookville with Indianapolis, railroad milepost 46 showing the distance from Cincinnati, the point where the canal bed separates from the railroad route, and Lock 21, a roughly 175-year-old lock beside Yellow Bank Creek whose chamber and walls can still be explored.
