Alcovy Mountain is an isolated monadnock in Georgia about four miles south of Monroe. Rising to 1,088 feet, it is the highest point in Walton County and is regarded as the southeastern-most mountain of significance in the Appalachian range. The mountain rises sharply above surrounding land from the banks of the Alcovy River, whose older Muskogean name, Ulcofauchatchie, meant “a river among the bog potato,” a reference to local pawpaw-lined swamps. European settlement gradually changed that river name to Alcovy. Although part of a small group of isolated Georgia monadnocks, Alcovy Mountain is privately owned and not open to the public or included in protected conservation lands.
