Throughout its history, Great Lakes Naval Training Center repeatedly fought to remain an important Navy training location. The Base Realignment and Closure decision of 1993 appears to have ended that struggle by making Great Lakes Naval Training Center the Navy's only training center and the enlisted surface warfare training center for the entire Navy. The decision was due in part to the unique service schools located only at Great Lakes and to community support that convinced the BRAC committee that Great Lakes was the best choice to lead Navy training into the 21st century.
