At the Virginia House on the main street in Philippi, a Confederate headquarters flag flew over Colonel Porterfield's headquarters. The flag was cut down and taken by First Lieutenant Charles A. Griffin of the First (West) Virginia Volunteers from Wheeling. The original flag, measuring 6 feet 5 inches by 15 feet, is in the State Museum at Charleston, West Virginia.
