San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge protects more than 7,000 acres of riparian woodland, wetlands, and grasslands along the San Joaquin River in California’s northern San Joaquin Valley. Established in 1987 under the Endangered Species and Migratory Bird Conservation Acts, it has played an important role in wildlife recovery, especially the return of the Aleutian cackling goose. The refuge is also the site of one of California’s largest riparian forest restoration efforts, with 400,000 native trees planted on 1,700 acres of floodplain. These restored habitats support Swainson’s hawks, herons, cormorants, and the reintroduced endangered riparian brush rabbit.
