In downtown Oklahoma City, the Oklahoma City National Memorial stands on the former site of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, where Timothy McVeigh’s truck bomb killed 168 people on April 19, 1995, including many children. Created after city leaders launched plans for a permanent remembrance, the memorial and museum honor victims, survivors, rescuers, and others affected by the attack. Dedicated in 2000, the outdoor memorial centers on the blast’s moment, with Gates of Time, a reflecting pool, the Field of Empty Chairs, the Survivors’ Wall, and the Survivor Tree. Together with the museum, it preserves the history and human impact of one of the deadliest acts of domestic terrorism in American history.
