The Spruce Creek Mound Complex in Port Orange, Florida, preserves major earthworks and shell middens created by Indigenous peoples on the southwest bank of Spruce Creek. Its most prominent feature, the Spruce Creek Mound, was built as a ceremonial center and burial mound between about 500 and 1000 AD, then enlarged over generations as new burials were placed above older ones. The site remained a visible landmark into the early colonial era. Used by Timucuan people at European contact, it also contains shell middens and European artifacts from about 1550 to 1700 AD, linking it to likely visits by Spanish explorers, traders, or colonists.
