Old Covered Bridge in Sheffield, Massachusetts, spans the Housatonic River just east of Sheffield Plain. The current structure is a pedestrian replica completed in 1996 after the 1837 bridge was destroyed by arson in 1994. That earlier bridge, built on Ithiel Town’s updated lattice truss patent, was one of the oldest known examples of its type and, by the time it burned, the oldest covered bridge in Massachusetts. The bridge is 93 feet long, stands on granite abutments, and connects long causeways across the flood plain. It was closed to traffic in 1970, restored in 1974 and 1981, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
