The Shakespeare Garden in Cedar Brook Park, part of Union County’s public park system, is more than 75 years old and is still cared for by the Plainfield Garden Club, a historic volunteer women’s organization founded in 1915. The club pursued beautification of the natural and horticultural landscape by planting groves, gardens, and shade trees, and by advocating the elimination of blight, the removal of billboards, and the conservation of natural habitats. When the Shakespeare Garden was begun in 1927, the concept was still relatively new. It sought to recreate the feel of an English garden from Shakespeare’s time by using flowers and plants mentioned in his works. The Plainfield Garden Club is included on the New Jersey Women’s Heritage Trail in recognition of the significant contributions of women’s volunteer organizations in New Jersey and their inspiring role in conservation activism.
