The land around Wise's Field was the scene of heavy fighting during the Battle of South Mountain on September 14, 1862. The property is owned by the Central Maryland Heritage League, a non-profit organization, which depends on donations to maintain the land and is restoring it to its original 1862 appearance in order to preserve Wise's Field for future generations.
