Clinton College was established in 1873 under the auspices of the West Union Baptist Association, and its first building was erected on this site in 1874. Rev. Willis White pioneered educational work in Hickman County and led the movement to secure the college charter. Under the leadership of Prof. T. N. Wells and Miss Amanda Hicks, the college contributed much to the Purchase area. It closed in 1913, and the site was used for Clinton High School from 1918 to 1935.
