Built in 1867 by Dr. Orville P. Chubb, the Chubb House is the oldest brick house still standing in Fairmont. Its bricks were burnt of clay from Buffalo Lake in Martin County. Dr. Chubb came to Martin County after serving as a physician in the Civil War and became the county's first physician. He also surveyed and platted early Fairmont, engineered construction of its first bridge, and was an owner and operator of the first grist mill there. His wife, Sarah, and daughter, Lottie, came the following year, and their son, Montier, was born at Fort Fairmont during their first winter. In 1992, the Martin County Preservation Association purchased the historic home for restoration.
