The lawn at the foot of Roanoke College’s historic Administration Building was dedicated as The John R. Turbyfill ’53 Quadrangle on October 23, 2008, in recognition of John R. Turbyfill, a Salem native and member of Roanoke College’s class of 1953. After graduating as salutatorian with a Bachelor of Arts degree, he earned an L.L.B. degree from the University of Virginia Law School. He was elected to the Roanoke College Board of Trustees in 1982 and served as chair from 1986 until his retirement in 2003, a tenure that included oversight of a period of unprecedented growth and achievement culminating in Roanoke College being named one of the Best National Liberal Arts Colleges. Turbyfill also had a long career with the Norfolk & Western Railway and then with Norfolk Southern, retiring as Vice Chairman of Norfolk Southern Corporation, and he was active as a civic leader in the Roanoke Valley and Tidewater communities.
