The Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro is a major university art museum with one of the Southeast’s largest collections of modern and contemporary art, especially American art. It began in 1941 as the Woman’s College Art Gallery, the first art gallery in the University of North Carolina system, and was named in 1942 for Elizabeth McIver Weatherspoon. Expanded in 1985 into the Anne and Benjamin Cone Building, it now houses nearly 6,000 works, notable collections of art on paper and Japanese woodblock prints, and works by leading modern artists, while supporting exhibitions, education, and scholarship year-round.
