Marblehead Light stands at the entrance to Sandusky Bay on Lake Erie and, in operation since 1822, is the oldest lighthouse in continuous use on the American side of the Great Lakes. Built from native limestone after Congress funded a light for this hazardous shore, it evolved from whale-oil lamps to a Fresnel lens, rotating light, electricity, and eventual automation in 1958. Keepers such as Benajah and Rachel Wolcott played vital roles in navigation, weather observation, and rescue efforts, later joined by a nearby lifesaving station. Today the beacon remains active, while the keeper’s house and station replica preserve its history within Marblehead Lighthouse State Park.
