Hawkins Peak is a 10,024-foot summit in Alpine County, California, rising above Hope Valley in the Sierra Nevada and standing out sharply above West Carson Canyon. Part of a group of volcanic summits near Markleeville, it may be a flank vent of the Round Top volcano. The pass between Hawkins Peak and Markleeville Peak entered the written record in 1833 with Joseph R. Walker’s expedition. The United States Geological Survey mapped the mountain in 1893, and its name was later officially adopted by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. Named for John Hawkins, an early settler in Hot Springs Valley, the peak remains a prominent Hope Valley landmark.
