Old Toby, a Shoshone guide, led the Lewis and Clark expedition from the Salmon to the Bitterroot Valley after showing Captain Clark that the Salmon River Canyon was impassable. He served the expedition without fee, fame, or reward. During August and September 1805, the expedition included Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, soldiers Patrick Gass, John Ordway, Nathaniel Pryor, William Bratton, John Collins, John Colter, Reuben Fields, Robert Frazier, George Gibson, Silas Goodrich, Hugh Hall, Thomas B. Howard, Baptiste LePage, Hugh McNeal, John Potts, George Shannon, John Shields, John E. Thompson, William Werner, Joseph Whitehouse, Alexander H. Williard, Richard Windsor, and Peter Wiser, and civilians George Drouillard, Pierre Cruzat, Francis Labiche, Toussaint Chaboneau, Sacajawea, Little Toussaint Chaboneau, Old Toby, and York.
