On November 1, 1859, during an excursion trip from Oshkosh to Chicago, the locomotive Perry H. Smith struck an ox near here. The train was pulling 11 cars and carrying an estimated 600 people. Five cars derailed, killing 14 and injuring at least 30. Although the crash was determined to be unavoidable, the accident led to the required fencing of livestock along this line.
