Bear Creek Methodist Church was established in the early 1820s under the leadership of Rev. Thomas Nixon. The first sanctuary, a log cabin structure, was built in the late 1820s. The third sanctuary, this vernacular Greek Revival structure, was built in 1858. Bear Creek Methodist Church closed in 1966. The trustees of the Utica Methodist Protestant Church purchased the property in 1968, and the congregation changed its name to the Bear Creek Methodist Protestant Church the same year.
