Hennion Block, an original two story building on the site of one of Albia’s early livery stables, is believed to have been built between 1890 and 1898. Fire maps show a livery south of the building as late as 1913. Its owner, M. E. Hennion, was a pioneer farmer who came to Monroe County in 1851 and farmed over 860 acres in 1878, making him a man of some wealth. After a fire in 1904, the building was rebuilt and a Mansard roofed third story was added. It was occupied by the Knights of Pythias for a number of years before being converted to a rooming house. It is one of only two structures in the district with a Mansard roof and retains features from its restoration, including cast iron store fronts, leaded glass transom windows, and four unusual original oculus windows on the north side.
