Estill Presbyterian Church was founded in 1898 by residents of Estill and Lawtonville who belonged to distant Presbyterian churches and wanted to organize a congregation locally. Its first services were held in a school on Fourth St., and the first permanent church, a frame building, was built here in 1909 on land donated by Sumpter Mills Clarke, Sr. Temporary, or stated supply, pastors served here from 1898 to 1955, including Dr. Paul Frederick Brown from 1912 to 1923, and Dr. Frank B. Estes became the first full-time minister in 1955. The church burned during services in 1934, and the present Classical Revival church, built from 1934 to 1937, opened in 1937 and was completed after World War II.
