In Missouri’s Kansas City area, this site preserves the homes most closely connected to Harry S. Truman, including the Independence house where he and Bess Truman lived for most of their married life and the Grandview farm where he worked as a young man. Designated in 1983, it also includes homes linked to their extended family. The Independence house served as the Trumans’ family home, later as Truman’s office after his presidency, and was the birthplace of their daughter Margaret. The farm preserves remnants of the larger family property that shaped Truman’s early life. Together these places show how deeply his life remained rooted in Missouri.
