Kansas became a free state in 1861 after violent conflict over slavery, and after the Civil War emancipated Black people migrated there from Southern states seeking freedom and citizenship. Atchison grew rapidly between 1860 and 1870 with new Black residents, but during Reconstruction many white communities opposed equal rights and used intimidation, repression, and racial terror lynchings. In Kansas, racial bigotry, discrimination, segregation, and abuse were pervasive, and white mobs often seized Black people from jails and police custody while law enforcement failed to intervene. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, racial terror lynching became widespread, often without legal consequences for white mobs. Between 1865 and 1950, white mobs lynched over 6,500 Black people in the United States, including 22 documented racial terror lynchings in Kansas and at least one known victim in Atchison County. On January 4, 1870, in Atchison, a mob of at least 50 white men lynched George Johnson, a Black man who had accidentally injured a white man while hunting five days earlier. Fearing retaliatory white mob violence, Johnson fled but soon surrendered to local authorities and was jailed at 6th and Santa Fe. Although the county attorney indicated charges were unlikely because his only alleged crime was fleeing the scene, rumors spread that a mob was coming for him, and law enforcement refused to protect him. At 11:30 pm, the mob broke into the jail without resistance from the deputy on duty, shot Johnson three times, put a rope around his neck, beat him, dragged him to 4th and Commercial, shot him several more times, then carried him to the 5th Street Viaduct and hanged him. Although at least 2,000 witnesses were present, no one was ever indicted or held accountable.
