On September 20th, 1863, in the morning, Brigadier General William H. Lytle's Brigade of Sheridan's Division in McCook's Corps included the 36th Illinois under Colonel Silas Miller, the 88th Illinois under Lieutenant Colonel Alexander S. Chadbourne, the 21st Michigan under Colonel William B. McCreery, the 24th Wisconsin under Lieutenant Colonel Theodore S. West, and the 11th Indiana Battery under Captain Arnold Sutermeister. Before daylight on September 20th the brigade was brought from Lee and Gordon's Mill to this position and formed with Laiboldt's Brigade on its right and Bradley's (Walworth's) in reserve. About 11 o'clock Laiboldt was ordered to the vicinity of the Tan Yard. General Sheridan was then ordered to proceed with his remaining brigades to General Thomas, and he moved at double-quick with Lytle's Brigade in advance.
