Calvert Cliffs State Park in Lusby preserves part of the cliff line along the western shore of Chesapeake Bay and is especially important for fossils and geology. Its exposed Calvert, Choptank, and St. Marys formations record a coastal ocean that covered the area about 18 to 15 million years ago, as well as environmental change during the Middle Miocene. The beach below the closed, eroding cliffs is known for shark teeth and other marine fossils, including notable whale remains. The area also has a human history reaching back to Captain John Smith’s 1612 map, while the modern park was established through Maryland land purchases and development in the late 1960s.
